Revitalization of City Districts – Springfield, Missouri
Project Description
Environmental Works, Inc. (EWI) has partnered with the City of Springfield, Missouri for several years on various environmental assessment and brownfield restoration projects under the City Brownfields Consultant Contract.
Of significant note, an abundance of abandoned service stations, petroleum distribution facilities and neglected underground storage tanks (USTs) have hindered redevelopment projects throughout the community. To help mitigate associated concerns, EWI has successfully completed dozens of environmental assessments through joint ventures with MDNR, developers and various community-based organizations. These projects include:
-
Historical District Redevelopment– Numerous Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) to promote redevelopment along a historic district. Related services include Phase I / Phase II assessment and site characterization in response to abandoned petroleum storage tanks. Follow-up support often entailed removal and closure of abandoned USTs, Tier 1 / Tier 2 Risk Assessments, and corrective action with MDNR oversight.
-
Downtown Square District– More than 30 Phase I environmental assessments within a historic downtown square district. Environmental clearance of historically significant properties provided the foundation for high-profile urban infill projects that would have been delayed without timely Phase I / Phase II reporting and associated consulting services.
-
Innovation Center– Expedited 6 Phase I Assessments to promote expansion of and commencement of an Innovation Design Entrepreneurship and Arts (IDEA) Commons with a state university. Coordinated environmental due diligence with both City and University officials.
- HUD Grant Support – Various expedited Phase I / Phase II ESAs in support of additional funding and redevelopment through the City’s Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Program. Specific projects include a historic castle and a mill & lumber company.
