Major Rail Carrier Intermodal Facility – Gardner, Kansas

Project Description
EWI effectively managed numerous environmental and site development issues at a new major rail carrier’s intermodal facility being constructed. EWI provided a diverse range of waste management services throughout this 1,100-acre property. Related services included the following:

  • Waste characterization / quantification
  • Disposal determinations for various waste streams
  • Assessment of environmental impacts and risk

Prior to purchase by the major rail carrier, the subject property was used primarily for agricultural purposes, and included multiple residences and farm headquarters. EWI worked closely with various regulatory agencies to complete a number of tasks at the site, such as the plugging and abandonment of 12 private drinking water wells and 8 oil production wells, decommissioning of 11 septic systems, closing 4 permitted dairy livestock lagoons, and capturing / transporting approximately 600 game fish from ponds to local public lakes.

EWI also worked for several months identifying, collecting, sorting, and consolidating various environmental wastes throughout the acreage. These wastes included mercury thermostats, fluorescent tubes and associated ballasts, paint related material, petroleum, various aerosols, pesticides, herbicides, white and brown goods, batteries, and misc. household hazardous waste.

Specifically, EWI consolidated, profiled, and disposed over 500 gallons of various petroleum-based products, 500 tires, 200 gallons of household hazardous waste and agricultural chemicals, and 450 tons of white goods and miscellaneous trash from the property.

Project Accomplishments
EWI completed project work on time and under budget, within the technical requirements of the contract. Extensive quantities of various solid and hazardous wastes were categorized, quantified, and addressed to the satisfaction of this major rail carrier. Waste profiling and disposal activities were managed in accordance with applicable local, state and federal regulations. EWI applied extended 24/7 shift work under often complicated logistical and weather scenarios to ensure successful completion of the project.
