Truck Stop - Mt. Vernon, Missouri
Project Description
A petroleum marketer contracted Environmental Works, Inc. (EWI) to address concerns related to the storm water runoff from one of their truck stops. Specific project challenges included:
- Storm water runoff from the property consistently contained contaminant levels that exceeded the allowable levels in the facility’s NPDES permit.
- Storm water runoff from the six-acre asphalt lot discharged into a residential neighborhood directly behind the truck stop, raising local resident concerns.
- The potential treatment options were limited by the large volume of runoff and small area in which storm water treatment was possible. The area where treatment was possible contained several underground public utilities.
EWI provided the following services to address these challenges:
- A conceptual plan for installing an oil-water separator and retention basin was generated.
- EWI partnered with a local engineer to design the separator and retention basin. Engineering plans were developed to include a wetlands within the retention basin.
- EWI met with the MDNR to address the existing storm water violations and submit the proposed plan for providing a long term solution. A construction permit was issued by the MDNR for the proposed work.
- A local contractor was hired to complete the construction under EWI’s oversight.
- With the permission of the city’s government, over 300 feet of an 8-inch municipal water line and a sanitary sewer manhole were relocated in order to complete the construction of the retention basin.
Construction activities were initiated in July 2009 and completed in September 2009.
Project Accomplishments
The analytical results of the first sampling event conducted following completion of the construction indicated a 66% reduction in total suspended solids and a 90% reduction in oil & grease.
