Rail Yard - Kansas City, Missouri

Project Description
EWI provided field services and consulting oversight for a major rail carrier client in support of routine maintenance of a 500,000-gallon equalization (EQ) tank connected to a rail yard wastewater treatment system. Field services included oily sludge removal, tank cleaning, and mechanical maintenance on internal tank systems. EWI removed approximately 30,000 gallons of oily sludge during the cleaning of the tank.

Waste materials were disposed of at the local landfill as special waste. EWI successfully negotiated reduced rates for disposal using a solidification program developed by EWI in coordination with the landfill. Maintenance of EQ tank piping, fittings, and other tank components was performed in conjunction with the cleaning under a highly accelerated schedule. Tank cleaning and repairs were completed within three days of project implementation.

Project Accomplishments
EWI’s accelerated field schedule resulted in minimal down time for the wastewater treatment plant which resulted in zero down time for the associated diesel shop activities. Field execution prevented potential compliance issues and allowed for additional maintenance within the same time frame.

Further, implementation of a sludge solidification program prevented the need for additional treatment procedures that would have significantly escalated costs. Significant accomplishments are further presented below:

  • Successfully removed, stabilized, disposed of approximately 30,000 gallons of oily sludge
  • Negotiated reduced fees for landfill stabilization and disposal
  • Coordinated with the landfill to implement a sludge stabilization program, resulting in a more cost effective means of future sludge removal from the major rail carrier’s Kansas City area locations
  • Accelerated tank cleaning and maintenance with limited disturbance to wastewater treatment operations and zero down time for diesel shop operations
