Truck Stop - Strafford, Missouri
Project Description
A petroleum marketer contracted Environmental Works, Inc. (EWI) for emergency response cleanup and follow-up site characterization at a truck stop in Strafford, Missouri. These efforts were initiated to address a petroleum release from two gasoline product lines. EWI mobilized field professionals and equipment to recover free product. Subsequent activities included installation of three recovery wells within the product line trench and advancement of soil borings around the release source. EWI also developed an Initial Hazard Abatement Report, including a site characterization work plan for MDNR review and approval.
EWI initiated site characterization activities in February 2008. Since that time, EWI has performed a detailed hydrogeological investigation with the following components:
- Soil boring and monitoring well installations to delineate the extent of contamination in soil and groundwater;
- Collection of soil samples for chemical and geotechnical analyses;
- Groundwater sampling and associated data trend evaluations;
- Performance of aggressive product recovery efforts including fluid vapor extraction;
- Installation of soil vapor wells and associated sampling; and
- Preparation of various technical reports including Free Product Recovery, Tier 1/Tier 2 Risk Assessments and Soil Vapor Monitoring Reports.
Soil gas sampling and groundwater monitoring is on-going. Free product has not been detected in any recovery well since November 2008.
Project Accomplishments
- Emergency response and expedited free product recovery to prevent contaminant migration and elevated human health and ecological risks;
- Emergency response coordination and cooperation with various MDNR officials; and
- Significant reduction in free product levels and associated risks since installation of product recovery systems.
