Subsurface Investigation:
Railroad Facility

EWI was contracted to perform a subsurface investigation at a railyard located in Oklahoma. The investigation was conducted to delineate the extent of petroleum impact to soils and shallow groundwater resulting from the operation of a former diesel fueling system at the site.

Twenty-nine soil borings and three monitoring wells were installed at the site, and soil and groundwater samples were collected. The extent of soil impact was defined by the collected soil samples. Laboratory results showed minor petroleum concentrations in the shallow groundwater indicating minimal groundwater impact and limited migration.

Anticipated soil remediation will consist of excavation of identified "hot spot" areas with quarterly groundwater monitoring to track contaminant concentrations after removal of source soils. Quarterly monitoring was initiated in 2001.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Site historically operated as a diesel fueling facility

Site had operated a 25,000-gallon above-ground diesel storage tank

Investigation identified discrete “hot spot” areas, limiting remediation costs

Groundwater monitoring verified limited impact to groundwater.
