Lagoon Closure & Groundwater Investigation
Railroad Facility
EWI was contracted to oversee lagoon closure
and complete a groundwater investigation at former oil storage
ponds at a railway facility. Two oil storage ponds were constructed
in series in the 1960s to receive oily wastewater from site
operations. The ponds served as settling basins and water from
the ponds discharged to a nearby creek.
EWI documented the removal
and off-site disposal of more than 20,000 tons of sludge and
soil from the ponds area, and collected soil samples for closure.
A soil remediation report was submitted to the Missouri Department
of Natural Resources’ Voluntary
Cleanup Program, and the agency issued a No Further Action
letter for the soils at the site.
Monitoring
wells were drilled and installed to bedrock around the former
storage ponds. Samples are collected using EPA-recommended
low-flow purging/sampling procedures. Sample
results will be used to assess potential impacts to shallow
groundwater, and determine the need for remedial activity.
