The Rise of Alternative Energy

According to the US Department of Energy, an alternative energy revolution is happening, and it’s generating money and opportunities for companies that are savvy enough to get on board. What is alternative energy, and how can you use it? Scroll down to learn how Environmental Works, Inc. (EWI) can make it work for you.

The Rise of Alternative Energy

In the 1970s, concerns about oil and coal shortages became common, compelling energy professionals to start investing in alternative energy sources. Fast forward to 2020, and it’s amazing how quickly the field has grown. While there are lots of alternative energy technologies emerging right now, two of the most common are solar energy and wind energy.

Solar Energy

Solar energy refers to energy that is harvested from the sun. The most common method is the use of photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells are placed in arrangements that vary in size and are mounted on everything from calculators to the roof of a factory. Use of solar energy grows by 49 percent every year in the United States, and there are currently more than 2.5 million solar installations generating clean energy across the nation. Harvesting solar energy has a minimal impact on the environment once it’s installed. Best of all, it can significantly lower your operating costs.

Wind Energy

Wind energy is created when the kinetic energy of wind is collected by wind turbines. If you have traveled through an area that uses wind power, you may have seen large, white and grey structures that look somewhat like windmills. These are actually wind turbines. When wind hits their large propellers and makes them spin, they send the resulting kinetic energy into the grid. Use of wind turbines has grown by more than 25 percent per year over the last decade. They are currently one of the largest resources of alternative energy in the United States. Much like solar energy, wind energy is an environmentally friendly option. If you are in a high-wind area and have lots of space, wind turbines can provide real energy savings for your home or business.
