LNAPL and DNAPL Response and Investigation Services

Nonaqueous phase liquids, or NAPLs, are routinely common commercial products that can lead to serious health and ecological issues if they are released to the environment. Fortunately, environmental remediation experts have several techniques to address both kinds of NAPLs (LNAPLs and DNAPLs) before damage occurs. Read on to explore the basics of LNAPL and DNAPL response and investigation services.

What Are NAPLs?

Nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) are hydrocarbons that exist as a “separate, immiscible phase when in contact with water and/or air.” In other words, these substances are not water-soluble. For that reason, these liquids can lead to serious groundwater contamination problems. That contamination commonly results from the release of petroleum products, but can also occur from the release of dry cleaning chemicals, paint strippers and other solvents, pharmaceuticals, and even some commonly used fats. NAPLs are divided into two classes: light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) and dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs).

What Is the Difference Between LNAPLs and DNAPLs?

Density is the key difference between LNAPLs and DNAPLs. The former are chemicals that have densities less than water; the latter are chemicals that have densities higher than water. Despite their differences, both have the potential to migrate deep into the subsurface and negatively affect groundwater quality, if released to the environment. Due to their insoluble nature, organizations like Environmental Works, Inc. (EWI) must devise creative LNAPL and DNAPL clean-up methods.

LNAPL and DNAPL Response Services

At EWI, we take a holistic approach to environmental remediation. We have decades of experience investigating NAPLs of all kinds, which informs our approach to successful clean-up strategies. Our experienced team offers years of expertise in the following remediation services:

  • Bioremediation
  • Chemical oxidation/reduction
  • LNAPL and DNAPL source removal/recovery/excavation
  • Soil vapor extraction
