POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Project Manager/Compliance Manager an Associate Scientist is responsible for managing a variety of complex and challenging environmental projects that include gathering information, compiling and writing, inspections and reports, completing sampling and field work, and general technical reporting activities. This position requires the ability to have a high level of attention to detail.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Ability to understand and implement permit parameters effectively for sampling or other requirements for several different industries.
- Perform Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspections of regulated areas and outfalls as required by state-specific or site-specific permits.
- Inspections include visual monitoring of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) and escalation of required corrective actions to be implemented including significant new materials or regulated activities that drive plan/permit changes, non-stormwater discharge evaluations, stormwater discharge visual assessment.
- Complete sampling requirements (visual or analytical sampling requirements) on-time in a safe and time-efficient manner.
- Ability to review the analytical data from the sampling results and notify the project or program manager(s) of any exceedances or overages.
- Timely track inspections and sampling requirements, corrective actions/corrective actions reports (CARs), and communication with project/program managers.
- Request information and communicate with various governmental and regulatory organizations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with employees at all locations.
- Conduct activities in a safe and healthy manner and work in accordance with established OSHA and internal requirements.
- Required to follow safety standards. Required to wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas.
- Promote a positive working environment in order to achieve the organization’s goals.
- Travel up to 50% via driving a company vehicle.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
- This is a full-time position. Ability to work flexible hours with some weekend and holiday work required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Ability to meet deadlines and communicate effectively is required.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently is required.
- For insurability purposes a valid Driver’s License is required.
- Undergraduate degree in Scientific, Engineering, or related discipline is required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- One (1) year previous Environmental consulting experience preferred.
- Two (2) – three (3) years of previous environmental experience preferred.
- Experience in Environmental Compliance is a plus.
- Familiar with SWPPP and SPCC inspections/document requirements, is a plus.
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certified strongly preferred.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Handle waste for environmental monitoring, sampling, packaging, and correctly package and label various wastes that may contain petroleum, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), paint, solvents, wastewater sludge, and more.
- Provide troubleshooting and maintenance of mechanical and electronic systems including pumps, and monitoring equipment.
- Research information and compile reports such as Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC), Toxic Management Plans (TOMPs) and other reports as assigned.
- Request information from various governmental and regulatory organizations.
- Submit permit reporting requirements to various government and regulatory agencies under the supervision of senior staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed mostly in an uncontrolled atmosphere. Exposure to harsh conditions such as: dust, fumes, chemicals, hazardous materials, noise, and varying weather and temperatures for long periods of time is possible. All employees are required to follow safety standards and wear all personal protective equipment in designated areas. Work in diverse environments such as confined spaces, various heights, and storage tanks. Work outdoors in all weather conditions; extreme heat, cold, dry or wet environment.
