According to a report recently shared by PBS News Hour, American manufacturing jumped to a three-year high in February. This is excellent news for the manufacturing industry as the nation’s economy works to bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. But an increase in manufacturing also signals a need for increased industrial cleaning and continual implementation of COVID-safe hygiene practices. Find out what the recent U.S. manufacturing peak means for your business, and how Environmental Works can help.
What the Recent U.S. Manufacturing Peak Means for Your Business
U.S. Manufacturing at a Three-Year High
PBS News Hour reported on a study by the Institute for Supply Management that found that U.S. manufacturing expanded in February at its fastest pace in three years. To be specific, the Institute’s gauge of manufacturing activity “rose to a reading of 60.8 percent last month.” Fortunately, that reading is a full 2.1 percentage points above the January level of 58.7 percent. According to PBS, this was the manufacturing sector’s strongest performance since February 2018. The level of manufacturing in February 2018 was also the nation’s highest since a reading of 61.4 percent in May 2004. Finally, the report found that the manufacturing industry’s employment index stood at 54.4 percent, up from 52.6 percent in January.
Industry Members Speak Out
The PBS article cited several industry professionals, including Timothy Fiore, chair of the Institute for Supply Management manufacturing survey panel. In the article, Fiore said the survey shows that “a recovery is ongoing.” This involves manufacturers working against lingering pandemic issues like supply-chain shortages and temporary shutdowns. PBS also reported that manufacturers are benefiting from spending, with Americans using the money they would typically spend on dining out or traveling on at-home projects like renovations. “They are buying all kinds of items that the manufacturing economy builds,” Fiore said.
The Future of U.S. Manufacturing
As PBS reports, President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order to boost manufacturing jobs by strengthening several key U.S. supply chains. “Strong consumer demand for goods, increasing business investment, a roaring housing market and global economic growth are all supporting U.S. manufacturing,” said PNC Chief Economist Gus Faucher in the article.
What the Boost Means for Your Manufacturing Business
As the manufacturing industry continues to thrive, manufacturers may experience a welcome boost in business. However, facility-wide COVID-19 hygiene protocols are still crucial to maintaining a safe and ethical business. The nation continues to weather the pandemic, which means manufacturers should focus on increased industrial cleaning. This is crucial for facilities to keep up with the increased demand for hard goods. Additionally, manufacturers should work to maintain safe facilities to minimize the possibility of unexpected shutdowns for sanitation.
